Sucralfate syrup is prescribed by veterinarians for dogs and cats to treat and prevent ulcers and other damage to the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Sucralfate works by coating damaged tissue, protecting it from stomach acid and other irritants, and promoting healing.
Common uses
- Treating ulcers: Sucralfate is used to manage and heal existing ulcers in the mouth, esophagus, stomach, and small intestine.
- Preventing ulcers: It can be used to protect pets who are at risk of developing ulcers. This includes animals taking medications known to cause GI distress, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like aspirin.
- Managing acid reflux: For pets with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus), sucralfate can help minimize damage from stomach acid.
